The Purple Martins - A Friendly and Companionable Bird

The purple martin is undoubtedly one of the best-loved birds and one that seems to court the friendship of man. From time immemorial, before the white man arrived in America, the Indians loved this friendly and companionable bird, that fashioned crude nesting places and often hung up hollowed gourds for its use. After the long winters, the Indians knew the spring growing season was well under way, and started planting their crude gardens, when the martins returned.
