ITRI and Komori Jointly Unveil Next Generation Touch Panel Equipment
Non-Lithography Roll-to-Roll Fine-Line Printing Technology to be Featured at 2013 Touch Taiwan Exhibit
 
Light and slim bezels have become the mainstream of smart portable devices.
ITRI and Japan Komori today (August 27) announce their jointly developed non-lithography roll-to-roll fine-line printing technology. This leading technology of less than 20μm direct printing can be used to fabricate touch panels with very slim bezels. This breakthrough will replace the expensive manufacturing processes that need deposition, photolithography, and etching. It is poised to become a critical process equipment technology for next generation touch panels, and is expected to be introduced for a mass production next year, paving the way for major changes in the touch panel industry.

Output of the global touch panel industry in 2012 grew 48% to NT$494 billion, with Taiwan continuing to hold the world's largest share of the market at over 50%. Thanks to the support of the Department of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs over the years, ITRI has accumulated considerable capability in roll-to-roll technology and completed a comprehensive roll-to-roll pilot line. ITRI's opportunity to cooperate with Komori has helped forge even a higher level of technology, with the two parties’ jointly developing roll-to-roll printing machinery featuring ultra-thin frame wires of under 20μm. This new breakthrough in the printing process of flexible electronics will be phased in touch panel production lines and further impacts on other applications.
At present, most touch panel makers still rely on the photolithography manufacturing process, which is both complicated and costly. ITRI has developed innovative roll-to-roll equipment and conveyance technology, introducing high precision, fine-line printing technology into the touch panel manufacturing process, and thereby enabling direct printing on ultra-thin substrates. This can replace the photolithography process, and one machine can replace the seven used traditionally for patterned sputtering, coating, printing and etching. The material utilization of conductive ink consequently rises to 95% from 5%, enabling 4-to-5-layer manufacturing process of touch panels to become more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical.
Dr. C.T. Liu, General Director of Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratories, ITRI, stated that products with all different types of slim bezels can be found on the market, with the width of the bezel dependent on the wire width and distance of the wire in the production process. He noted that presently most printing technologies in mass production feature line-width of 60-80μm, while advanced gravure printing can reach line-width of 30-50μm. The newly announced technology by ITRI and Komori can reach 20-30μm, the same level as photolithography process. It also further reduces time and costs in the manufacturing process. This printing technology, he said, could be applied to touch panels immediately, and also to OLED lighting, high-speed circuit boards, displays, and solar panels in the near future.

This technological breakthrough will be displayed at ITRI's booth (#M1234) for three days starting on August 28 at the “2013 Touch Taiwan” to be held at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall.

ITRI Establishes Second Presence in Europe
 
Eindhoven, The Netherlands, June 28th, 2013 –In a bid to strengthen innovation-oriented R
D cooperation between Taiwan and the Netherlands, Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has announced the establishment of the Eindhoven-HTC Office, ITRI. The office, which will formally commence operations at High Tech Campus Eindhoven on June 28th, will become ITRI's second presence in Europe.ITRI previously opened an office in Germany. Dr. Frank Chen, the General Director of ITRI International Center and the Managing Director of ITRI’s Eindhoven-HTC Office, stated that the emphasis of the office will mainly be on developing and maintaining an innovation-oriented R
D network and partnership with the Netherlands, while assisting Taiwan's industrial, academic, and research communities in forging multi-disciplinary and complementary R
D cooperation initiatives with counterparts in the Netherlands. Initially, the office will focus on three areas, namely high-tech systems and materials, health and life sciences, and green energy sources.In addition, the PENROSE Project will also be an important cooperative mission, helping Taiwan's 3D printing industry and factories to enter the EU market, thereby developing high value-added markets throughout the globe and international collaborative opportunities. Vice Economics Minister Woody Duh and the MOEA's Department of Industrial Technology Director Chiun-Neng Lin, who are currently visiting Europe, have been invited to attend the opening of ITRI’s Eindhoven-HTC Office and the ceremony marking the establishment of the 3D printing technology international alliance. Vice Minister Duh expressed his hopes that the innovation-oriented R
D cooperation mechanism between Taiwan and the Netherlands will foster the exchange of innovative technology and lead to the development of business opportunities. This will not only build momentum for related cooperation between Taiwan and Europe and enhance the partnership between Taiwan and the EU, but will also expand Taiwan's cooperative foundation in Europe with respect to trade, innovative R
D, and research, he said. Mr. Cees Admiraal, the Business Development Director of High Tech Campus Eindhoven, stated that the Campus is one of Europe's leading centers for the development of technology and is the capital of innovation in the Netherlands. Mr. Admiraal extended a warm welcome to ITRI on the creation of its Eindhoven-HTC Office. ITRI attends 2013 BIO International Convention Taiwan’s agribiotechnology rides the boom of biotechnology
BIO International Convention 2013 debuted in Chicago on April 22 for a four-day exhibition. This year Chang San-Cheng, Minister without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan, heads Taiwan delegation to the convention. Integrating resources of the industry, government, academics and research, the delegation jointly showcased Taiwan’s R
D capacity of the biotechnology industry in the "Taiwan Pavilion".
The delegation includes the Department of Health (DOH), Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Animal Technology Institute, National Research Program for Biopharmaceuticals (NRPB), Science Park Administration, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Program Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and a number of Taiwan's biotech makers.
ITRI hosted the international case study of Innovation
Solutions for Agricultural Biotechnology in Taiwan in the convention.
Dr. Richard Shau, Vice President of ITRI and General Director of ITRI’s Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratories, pointed out that the BIO International Convention traditionally has pharmaceuticals as the protagonist. However, the venture capital firms have become more cautious in medical and pharmaceutical investment since the financial crisis. This has given a new opportunity for agribiotechnology to catch on the boom of biotechnology. Agribiotechnology stole the show for a second time in the convention since 2007. Taiwan boasts strength in agricultural technology, such as successful cultivation of orchids, which has turned Taiwan into a reputed orchid growing country. Taiwan’s diversified varieties of tropical fruits are also highly acclaimed. ITRI, acting as the bridge between Taiwan’s agricultural biotechnology research institutes and the international community, conveyed and displayed the brilliant results of Taiwan’s agribiotechnology.
Dr. Richard Shau pointed out that ITRI boasts a host of R
D achievements in agribiotechnology, such as intelligent greenhouse framework, the development of flora growth under illumination of LED lamps, intelligent automatic control systems, and light induction film technology. All of these accomplishments have caught the attention of the market. Furthermore, ITRI has carried out experiments on genotoxicity, cytotoxicity and other kinds of animal experiments, and successfully verified that the Silkies blood can be used as high-value immunomodulatory health food. These are successful stories of applying technology to assist in agricultural transformation or development. At the convention, speakers are concomitantly invited to share the breakthroughs of Taiwan’s agribiotechnology and success stories, including animal gene modification and pigs’ vaccines, etc. Convention attendees had a glimpse of Taiwan’s development potential and innovation in biotechnology in agriculture. We look forward to cooperating with large foreign firms and investment opportunities.
Moreover, ITRI will facilitate the contact between domestic protein-drug firms and international manufacturers at the Convention. Dr. Richard Shau noted that, compared to small molecule medicine and Chinese herbal medicine, protein drugs have comparatively longer efficacy, thereby attracted more and more global pharmaceutical companies to devote to the research and development in this field, particularly in monoclonal antibody technology, Taiwan already has researched and developed protein drugs with fairly good efficacy for treating systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis disease, etc. Through this international convention platform, the industry leaders could evaluate opportunities for collaboration with Taiwan for the Asia-Pacific market.
