London Bridge Is Falling Down

The bridge was originally a wooden structure built by the Romans in 43 AD, but fell into disrepair and collapsed after they left the city in 410 AD. Over the years it was rebuilt many times using timber, which always resulted in its destruction. In 1176 however after a major fire, Peter Colechurch, a priest began the rebuilding of it in stone.

Today some 40,000 vehicles cross Tower Bridge every day and it opens for river traffic about 900 times a year.The Old London Bridge of nursery-rhyme fame was built by Peter of Colechurch between 1176 and 1209, replacing an earlier timber bridge. Because of obstructions encountered in building the cofferdams, the arch spans varied from 15 to 34 ft, the uneven construction resulted in frequent need for repair, but the bridge survived more than 600 years.
