Although The Great Gatsby is one of America's most beloved and respected novels, the basic premise of the book is so simple that it could easily make for a bad sitcom: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, girl marries someone else, boy buys nearby mansion, tells girl he happened to be "in the neighborhood." What gives the story it's depth and complexity - aside from the tricky love pentagram and depressing double-murder/suicide - are the elements added by Nick Carraway's narration.
