Political journalist Theodore White wrote fascinating books defining American culture and relating it to presidential elections. He took us behind the scenes - and put us right in the middle of each campaign. Things have changed today - with tabloid-style books and hyped media tours - usually headlined by the candidates themselves - or someone with an agenda to promote - the Sarah Palin book tour is a good example.
